With this document I want to go over some of our basic keys for different plays, mainly runs and passes.
I believe we all understand our initial keys on set formations when there is a double/ double or a pro-type formation (two backs in backfield w/ QB)
Let's go over our trips coverages again and plays w/ motion.
Trips to our side (LJ or HL) -- our initial key is the second eligible in on the formation. If it is a pass play, we stay w/ #2, unless third man in (TE, wing or slot) stays in to block. When this occurs, and be ready this happens at least 40-50% of the time, we switch keys w/ the Back Judge. The BJ now switches to #2 eligible and the HL,LJ watch the block on #3 and we can now help on our tackle a little also if the block by #3 is "soft" or
non-threatening. HL's, when this happens, we hold the LOS and watch the blocking from the LOS. If you slide a yard or two, that's fine, but we are more concerned with the blocking at this point. Ball is passed-- now we react to the pass and go quickly to the pass area and move quickly downfield, ready to help rule where the ball is passed to.
